About the story
Separation from a parent can be confusing and emotional for a child. In Ellie the Emu, Ellie finds herself apart from her parents, who are facing challenges in caring for her. Through Ellie’s journey, this story tenderly explores why parents might struggle and offers a message of hope, understanding, and reassurance
to children who may be experiencing a similar situation.
The inspiration
The inspiration for this story came shortly after finishing my first book, Going to Live with Auntie. I was on a trip with my family when we visited the cutest zoo. At the zoo, we noticed a pair of emus that were not very approachable on one side. As we walked further through the zoo, we learned that their child emu was on the other side. We don't know the circumstances for that particular situation, but I thought it could be a relatable and quirky story that may comfort children who experienced abandonment at a young age. I'm sure it's very confusing and hard to understand the circumstances that may lead to that. Hopefully, this story helps a child understand just a little better that sometimes grown-ups just don't know what to do in that situation themselves and they struggle. Eventually though the child (or emu) is in a safe and loving environment, well cared for and that's what matters most.
